Education

Learning is the key to the future - for children and adults alike.

Worcester County is served by an excellent public school system, with outstanding facilities and relatively high spending per pupil. The attendance rate, graduation rate and scores on standardized tests are well above the state average.
Serving approximately 7,000 students in PreKindergarten through grade twelve, the public school system has five elementary schools, one intermediate school, three middle schools, three high schools, one career and technology center and one special school. The facilities are modern, air-conditioned buildings with computer labs and media centers. Schools maintain small class sizes to provide individual attention to student needs. The average class size is 20 students in kindergarten through second grade, and 23-25 in grades three through twelve. There is also a wide variety of day care and pre-school facilities available throughout the county.
In all instructional programs, emphasis is placed on a comprehensive and challenging curriculum, using multi-cultural materials and modern technical equipment.
In 2000, 69% of the county's high school graduates planned to attend college or university; 18% went into the work force; 9% entered the military; and 4% had other plans.
Alternative learning is available at one private and three parochial schools. The Worcester Preparatory School, located in Berlin, offers small classes, innovative curriculum and outstanding facilities to 390 students, with 100% of these students going on to college.

To further address the needs of local businesses, the county has implemented a new technology preparation program, coordinated with the community college, that prepares students for the workplace of the future. Currently, 18 fields in three clusters are being offered.
