Education![]() Learning is the key to the future - for children and adults alike. ![]() ![]() Worcester County is served by an excellent public school system, with outstanding facilities and relatively high spending per pupil. The attendance rate, graduation rate and scores on standardized tests are well above the state average. Serving approximately 7,000 students in
PreKindergarten through grade twelve, the public school system has five elementary schools, one intermediate school, three
middle schools, three high schools, one career and technology center and one special school.
The facilities are modern, air-conditioned buildings with computer
labs and media centers. Schools maintain small class sizes to provide individual attention to
student needs. The average class size is 20 students in kindergarten through second grade, and
23-25 in grades three through twelve. There is also a wide variety of day care and pre-school
facilities available throughout the county. In all instructional programs, emphasis is
placed on a comprehensive and challenging curriculum, using multi-cultural materials and
modern technical equipment. In 2000, 69% of the county's high school
graduates planned to attend college or university; 18% went into the work force; 9% entered the
military; and 4% had other plans. Alternative learning is available at one private
and three parochial schools. The Worcester Preparatory School, located in Berlin, offers small
classes, innovative curriculum and outstanding facilities to 390 students, with 100% of these
students going on to college. Wor-Wic Community College, a two-year
institution, offers associate degrees in 10 fields, including computer programming, accounting
and business management. It also provides customized training programs for industry. Berlin is
home to a satellite campus, and a multi-million dollar main campus, a one-half hour drive or less
from all points in the county, opens in the fall of 1994 in Salisbury. To further address the needs of local
businesses, the county has implemented a new technology preparation program, coordinated with
the community college, that prepares students for the workplace of the future. Currently, 18
fields in three clusters are being offered. Salisbury State University is a four-year
institution located in Salisbury. The school, part of the University of Maryland system, has an
enrollment of over 4800 students and offers courses leading to bachelor's degrees in a variety of
subjects, as well as master's programs in Education, English, Psychology, Business and
Nursing. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is
in Princess Anne, a 45 minute or less drive from all points in the county. Also part of the state
university system, it is a four-year institution with an enrollment of over 2600. The school is
renowned for its hotel and restaurant management, marine science, physical therapy and
